A Visit With My Mother
A visit with my mother.. (She is frai now..almost fragile to the touch as I hold her,She stares out into the harbor, way beyond the harbor, mind not as sharp but still remembering, bits and pieces of the now and the then of her childhood days) Mom: ( whipering)rain is drizzling ,hope people take it easy... on the road, the road is slippery ..might skid.. don't want any accident.. Me: It's not that wet mom..I am sure the drivers are careful.. Mom: Where's..( forgets his name at times)Taj .. Me: it's Monday..he went to school.. Mom: oh !? Monday? ( Questioning look) losing track of the days( chuckles.. Continues..in a low shaky voice).." I count 1,2,3 boats in the harbor.. Me: not boats, those are ships.. Mom: Ships!?? ( Registering what I just said) Mom: ( still shaky) the poncianna trees are pretty.., red..and the coconuts are...small.. Me: yes they are small ,but have a lot of water in them.. Mom: Where's Taj( looking at me quizzically..her eyes not as bright as they once were) Me: he's at school , today is Monday.. Mom: yes, Monday.. ( Each sentence ,a new conversation) Mom: the rain is drizzling,I hope people take it easy on the road,it's slippery . Me: it's not falling heavy .. ( Still looking out into the harbor) Mom: ( softly, almost a whisper) I can see 1,2,3 boats out in the harbor.. Me: ( sigh) not boats mom, those are ships. Mom: ships!? Me: yes mom ,those are ships.. Mom: the poncianna trees are pretty this time of year, pretty red.. Me: yes they are.. Mom: Where's Taj?? Me: it's Monday mom, he is at school.... ( Her eyes resumes looking out into the harbor ,way beyond the harbor...) .
