Our Only Son
(Son) Father, mother, time has come, I’ll go out while I’m still young, To venture out and see creation, And wander through every nation. (Father) Silly boy, don’t you know? Life is long, take it slow, Wait some time before you go, As our child that’s what you owe. (Mother) What will we do all alone? Who will help us but our own? When we’re old and senile, Will you come all those miles? (Son) Before you die, I promise, I’ll come back, I’m honest, I’ll take care of both of you, And show you how much I grew. But the son who went away, Soon became nature’s prey, Before he could come back, He got buried in some crack. First the parents were full of hope, But after thirty years they began to cope, That the next time they’d see their son, Was when they’d died and life was done.
