Forward Motion
Forward Motion I have discovered, There are two sides to myself: One good and one bad, Each tearing at each, To go one way or the other. I straddle a split in the path And face a dilemma. The bad side leans To the way that is inviting, And more enjoyable to weather. The good side tilts to the other Which looks discomforting, For certain, less rewarding. And so I struggle, In the middle of the road, That seems to go on forever; With many forks, And follow my heart’s desire. Which direction is right, which is wrong? Voices compel me after the fact To question my judgment; “Go back and rethink your decision!” But that is impossible. Life is forward motion. And the past is just that. And the future! Avoid making the same error. —Life consists of learning curves. As I grow older and hope diminishes, I come to terms that my presence Was not constructive, Nor overly ambitious. I can pretend that I am teflon: No pain, indifferent, confident; Like Rodin’s sculpture, A piece of rock that exists,—stagnant.
