Lonely In a Crowd
I wandered lonely with heartfelt sob to see crowds roam through sales in malls When all at once I spied a mob A host,of glinting , jingling tills Beside the cafe and near the stairs Coughing up and vomiting bills As raucous as their racket grinds They jingle in the grasping store Stretching in never ending lines Along the margin of the floor Ten thousand saw I at a glance Pinging up prices in their merry dance. The folk beside them paid-but they Grabbed the glittering cash with glee A shopper could not but sad be In such cash conscious company I gazed-and gazed- but little thought What goods this visit for them had bought For oft when at home I do brood In pessimistic and reflective mood There rings up in my inner heart The sordid search for commercial bills And then my heart with dread doth start As my mind recalls those dreaded tills When of beauty there is a dearth What can we say are words worth?
