War Song
I wake up in this fine old house The quietus resides The silence, almost tangible Its pulse is almost palatable It's time to watch the rising sun Another day to feel the gulf that lies between a world undone and one I keep inside While reaching for my coffee cup, I'll hold the warmth against my breast as if it were my closest friend I step down from the old screen porch, so grateful for the dulcet sounds The morning sun is still the same as it filters through the lodge pole pines The breezes play that war song. Old heartaches still unwind The lyrics have not changed at all they ring with words I cannot bear Some stanzas seem too fathomless to shed another tear The questions they are asking, are the lyrics we have heard This song has played a thousand years, too many to recall Why must there be another war? And why so many scars? Why can't we play a song of love that treasures all mankind? Another day to feel the gulf that lies between a world undone and one I keep inside myself,…before the two collide...
