My TOOLBOX

I never speak on other poet's poetry. Sounds crazy, right!?! When I was at a woman's shelter, I developed a wonderful, vulnerable relationship with the founders. I cooked many Sundays with, I'll call her Susan. Her husband, Dan loved poetry and asked me to feel free to share with him. His wife encouraged me. I wrote a poem called, "Losing My Life." He called me into his office and was so deeply moved by it, that he was acting visiby shaken. He called it a "piece." I didn't know it then, but I had opened his heart. What followed was a little girl, who never had a dad, playing in his heart. I watched him bloom ("My Strand of Pearls") as he declared himself to be my mentor. I watched his wife, slowly start pulling away from me. In the end, Susan became so disgusted with me, she yelled at me, "Just stop it! Stop writing! If you must write, write for yourself!" The wound was so deep, for six months I couldn't write one word. It took Jesus, giving me a dream, that showed me, I was "The Jailer." Since then, I have never given the God-Given authority and power of my gift to another. WORD belongs to Jesus and I write in reverence of that TRUTH. Poetry is to me like an instrument is to a musician. I need it to process large concepts. I said all that to say, thank you so much for your time and comments...and if my processing speaks to you, thank you for the company on the journey.

I just want to add, Trudy, that if you are very intuitive, as many poets are, one can normally feel when a comment is well meant. These normally help the poet in some way or another especially when one is uncertain about a poem & need some comment. So I do feel that you should relinquish the unnecessary contract with yourself “not to speak on another’s poetry” as this could repress both your genuine voice as well as your critique-ing capacity. Merry Christmas.

Wow Trudy ! This is such a beautiful Christmas Eve story. ThkU for sharing. I will check if you’ve uploaded the poems you speak about. Yes, commenting is tricky as poets are very sensitive & one never knows if they will interpret a comment correctly. I myself have blocked a few poets who make patronising/snide comments or who merely comment to get a community rating or who I feel did not read with integrity. I perceive that American poets, because their culture is so competitive, are prone to comment merely to get badge attention. Personally, I rarely comment when a poem does not move me, except for new poets, from countries where English is not a first language, whom I can feel need encouragement. What you need to remember, Trudy, is that when someone reacts negatively to your talents it is never about you ~ it is always about them. Often the reaction is because your talents triggered an insecurity within them based on their own sense of worth. They need to deal with this, not you. Happy Holiday Season & have a beautiful Christmas. Xx
