Pinsky's aim with this book isbn 978-039334897)is to make useful hints and suggestions to encourage the 'budding poet' into a self motivating study. Learning by doing.Pinsky use four short essays-FREEDOM/LISTENING/FORM/DREAMING THINGS UP together with headnotes to the numerous(approx 100) poems/poets to illustrate his theory. Perhaps one area he has overlooked in this very helpful guide is to encourage reading the poetry 'aloud.(or better yet to listen to the poet do so,if recordings are available).It is only by so doing that the poem' lives 'becoming a unique experience 'one-off as is moment',an experience, between the poet and the reciter,that is unique and happens each time it is read aloud.This practice also helps the student/reciter understand what the poet really intended.This is perhaps the key learning 'aid' to replication by the student poet and hopefully creating his own unique forms.
