The Man Who Never Smiles
Though he asked for this poem, "The Man Who Never Smiles,"
his laughter was a comfort that could stretch for miles and miles.
He played the drums and strings and the music made him whole,
as we sang along together, connecting soul to soul.
He was my softest place to fall, a shield against the cold,
a steady well of quiet words and wisdom, gently told.
He let his heavy guard just drop, he valued who I was,
and cherished every precious hour we shared, just because.
He went so far out of his way to ensure my needs were met,
With small details and thoughtful ways, I never will forget.
To bring me joy, to bring me peace, he made me his design,
A constant, reassuring force that aligned itself with mine.
I never had to question where I stood within his life,
his pure intentions spoke aloud, removing doubt and strife.
He made me his priority, so consistent and so clear,
there was no room for second guessing when his soul was near.
I let my own walls crumble down, a soul unseen before,
who suddenly felt heard and safe behind his quiet door.
He treasured every piece of me—my mind, my heart, my frame,
and taught a body full of doubt to no longer feel ashamed.
He was so deeply respectful, yet he set my soul on fire,
his hands awoke a flame in me, a direct, fierce desire.
He kissed me with a depth that reached the tips of all my toes,
we were on fire together, with a warmth that only passion knows.
He understood that empathy is where true strength begins,
that vulnerability is brave and integrity always wins.
He strove to be so understanding, kind in every place,
and showed a tender, deep compassion time cannot erase.
He threw my world right off its tracks, a beautiful unrest,
as my exhausted nervous system settled in my chest.
He quieted the screaming storms, the thoughts so loud and blind,
and healed the broken, hidden parts that I had left behind.
He never shouted out his love or spoke it like a chore,
but like a current in the dark, I felt it to my core.
He was the sudden, pure sunshine against my raging sea,
redefining what it meant to love and just to be.
He was so deeply right for me, incredible and true,
a beautiful, brief season that I hold onto.
But I was trapped inside the dark and heavy through and through,
so broken and depressed within, I had no strength for you.
I could not give you what you gave or the space you needed,
and so, I walked away from love and left my heart to bleed.
But time has done nothing to fade the emptiness I feel,
the short, sweet time we had together is the only thing that's real.
He lives inside my waking thoughts, he visits in my dreams,
and missing him has torn my heart apart at all the seams.
I carry all the blame for this, for love we couldn't keep,
for words that screamed inside my head but died upon my cheek.
The world goes on; the shadows fall but nothing fills the space
I miss the Nicky that I treasure and time cannot replace.
