Poem
THE COBBLESTONE ROAD I was a road of cobblestone that led folks through the town, The people bought and sold on me from everywhere around. I saw the feet of priests and kings, of children and the aged, All traveling to get somewhere, in their own thoughts engaged. I wasn’t just the only way to get from here to there, For I knew of some other roads more fancy everywhere. They led the traveler many ways, to many other towns, But I was one quite different from the other roads around. I was the only road that led from town to a small plain, To a small hill outside of town where criminals were slain. So one day when another crowd of angry people came With soldiers and some beaten men, I thought it just the same But as I listened carefully to people as they cried, “Away with one who says He’s Christ, let Him be crucified!” I wished somehow right then and there that I could change my way, Not lead this God-sent man to death on Calvary’s hill that day. I felt the blood from this one man fall gently on to me, I felt the cross He drug along as people came to see. I think each stone upon my road wished for a hiding place, Not wanting to be so involved in this cruel, sad disgrace. And yet He traveled me that day, for as He went my way He knew I was the only road to save mankind that day. I was a road of cobblestone, and I am that road still; Just as I was the only way to Calvary’s rugged hill, The Man who traveled me that day to shed His blood and die Has said, “I am the way for you--no other way but I.” Yes, there may be some other road more fancy or more broad, But there is just one blood-stained road that leads a soul to God. It can’t be changed by anyone, though they may try and strive; We all must come to God through Christ, through Him be made alive. And so I ask you, friend, today, have you to Jesus come? Don’t try to come another way--He is the only one.
