Poem

The alarm is sounding, much louder today 
Give it up without even debating 
As a breeze whistles through my window 
Which means of course work is waiting 
In other words, Rise and Shine 
Or there’ll be a fast boot to the rear 
So, suck it up, get dressed and hurry 
Are you listening son? Do you hear? 
Breakfast is already waiting for me 
So I scarf it right down in my haste 
Cows need milking, animals need feeding 
Get a move on, no time to waste 
Milking’s all done, stock has been fed 
And the sun is peeping over the trees 
Mama’s washing clothes, hanging um on the line 
As daddy’s checking on those honey bees 
Grab up those poles, I’ve got the bait 
Think there’s a fish or two waiting somewhere
A wonderful sound on a summer’s day 
Watch out bass, you all better beware 
Another plate of fish another sweet potato pie 
And an iced tea to flush it down 
On the radio there’s that Grand Ole Opry 
Just a good old summertime sound 
Working the farm in the fifties my friends 
It didn’t get no better than that 
And yes, I do it all over again 
If I had to again go to bat
