Poem

No amount of sleep can prepare
parents of grown children 
the sleepless nights just begin
the minute they leave for them

Morning found me weary yet sane
with three of four the ones to blame
the oldest called just out of the blue
his tears were real his words were true

My daughter wants a child of her own
nothing will ever happen no fault of ever shown
her tears are real and they are true
only God can see this through

My dear Saw man how I love you
just like I was in so many truths
young, beautiful, and full of sass
with more burdens than he will admit, that last and last

My night I spent on my knees
praying for God to grace them with all his mercy
then by seven the phone did ring
their daddy calling to check on me

For the first time in 26 years I broke down into tears
I raised my babies all alone he was surely never home
so he took my words in love and truth
and made some calls to his children too

As he says to me in the afternoon,
this will only get harder with each new moon
raising children is not a mere 18-21 years
it is for as long as mom and dad sweat blood and tears
