Poem
Tears welled up in my eyes, as I looked square in the man’s eyes I could see the same eyes as the man in the drawing he had just drawn. I saw my grandfather’s eyes in his. I know, it sounds weird. He looked at me and said, “Be well young man” (I’m in my 40’s!) and he started to walk away. “Hey, you…you want something to eat, some water or something to drink?” I asked. “No, I’m done here-- you have a good night, and listen to what your angel said, you seem like a nice enough guy. Sure seems a waste if you died, and left your wife all alone.” I didn’t even ask how he knew I had a wife, I already had the answer. I looked down at the ground and staring back at me was my grandfather who’d died of cancer. I thanked the man and asked one more time if I could give him a ride or do something, I offered him what cash I had in my pocket but he declined. “I can’t take anything for what I do. Its God’s work, he feeds me when I need food, and clothes me when I get cold. Thank you anyway.” I thanked him, and told him I thought he was the angel and watched as he walked away. I looked down again at the drawing and all my childhood memories came flooding back-memories I'd long forgotten, but now it was as if they'd happened just yesterday. I looked up to ask him a question and he was gone! I walked back and looked up the cross street; both ways, thinking he’d turned the corner but he was clear out of sight. I don’t know how long I’d been looking at his work, but it couldn’t have been long enough to lose sight all together of the same man I’d noticed from two blocks away. I ran back to my house, and yelled for my wife, “You’re not going to believe this you gotta come with me now!”
