Poem

It’s turned to a game called “The Poetic Grin.”
Mischievous? Maybe, but not quite a sin.
The goal is to catch someone slightly off-guard.
If you remain in control, it’s not very hard.

There are no certain rules, no victory to take.  
Embarrassing your friend is the outcome at stake.
It’s best with those you’ve not seen in a while.
It starts when you flash them a masquerade smile.

As small-talk begins, you’re setting the bait.  
The best strategy to use is patiently wait.
“What cha’ been up to?” they’ll usually ask.
That’s when you put on the “innocent” mask.

“Oh not much, well, … there is one thing …
I’ve been writing poetry since early last spring.
I think it’s my ticket to fortune and fame!”
The next one to speak then loses the game.

You’ve painted them in with no where to go.
You had to be joking, but they don’t really know.
From puzzled responses to priceless retorts.
Most can’t hold back as laughter resorts.

“Get out” they’ll say, “You’re pullin’ my sleeve.”  
Respond with, “Is it really that hard to believe?”
Give them that face like your feelings are hurt.  
“You don’t like poetry?” then softly assert.

Then watch them retreat, not knowing what’s true.
Making fun is not something they wanted to do.
They’ll likely say something like, “Poetry’s nice.
I’ve read a few poems, maybe once, maybe twice.”

The look that they give you can be so much fun.  
Confusion will tell you, the game has been won.
It’s then you will flash them “The Poetic Grin.”  
They’ll never know how to believe you again.
