Poem

I still roll over in bed at night expecting to hear her snoring.
I still awake before sunrise and to no one whisper, “Good morning”.
I still get dressed in the dark, so the light will not disturb her,
And tiptoe out of the room stealing a glance over my shoulder.

I still set two breakfast plates and pull out her kitchen chair
And still fix eggs for her before remembering she’s not there.
I still leave the Funnies page, when I take the paper
And still expect the Crosswords done when I return much later.

I still call out, “Honey, I’m home”, when walking in the door,
But I don’t hear, “I'm back here”, returned to me any more.
I still pour two cups of wine in our favorite glasses,
But both of them I end up drinking before the night time passes.

It hardly seems like ten years ago that I lost my darling wife,
She shared and was a part of me for thirty years of my life,
But it still seems as if she’s here in my empty home,
Although in every one of my rooms I find that I’m alone.

Some day she will come back to me,
Or I will go be with her,
And continue what was meant to be,
For always and ever.
