it was unnecessary and unkind.
all you did was cut me off
from conversing with the very community
of which you speak, of which I am a part.

if you want the whole place to yourself,
you’ll have to use your words—
I don’t do any better with hints than you.

that’s why I left, your inability to read
the room or allow a breath 
inside of it other than yours— 
you still haven't figured that out. 
this is the same thing, claiming 
the castle for your chaos.

and maybe it works—
people love your decorative moat.

but I’ve seen the drawbridge chain
tucked under your smile.
and I’ve heard the nonstop 
dry-begging clatter of compliments 
you locked behind doors.

what did it accomplish other than 
isolating me from others? 
you were never getting smoke 
from this dragon in any form
other than verse— 
isn't that what real poets do? 
our version of breaking down the door
instead of breaking down?

you don’t have to answer to me.
I’m not knocking.
I’m drafting ambiguous blueprints
trying to build a new foundation
in this uncomfortable place.

consider using an umbrella at night
from now on. save that porcelain 
hide from being moonstruck
when the post-truth recoil happens.
