Poem

I looked at her, her angel voice still playing in the sound room. 
She sat surrounded by the band, just like we always do. 
Her songs were mesmerizing, she had everything to make it,
and in that moment God gave me this truth -

“No matter what, the songs we make are greater than the artists”.
The words came out as if it wasn’t me. 
Then she and I met eye to eye, we knew the truth was spoken. 
But everybody else saw differently. 

Then life moved on. She took her songs. That’s what’s supposed to happen. 
But what I learned has never left my mind. 
I think about it every time that we craft out another song.
I truly hope you don’t find this unkind.

But the music world we all know really ain’t about the music. 
It all about the artists and the bling. 
But someday every artist will have to face the music -
you’re not greater than the songs you sing. 

For every song you make will keep on living for forever. 
Yeah, every song you make is like a god. 
It can be in a million places speaking at one time
to the millions lost out in the fog.

For they are lost. Don’t you know your song’s become their healing?
Sometimes it’s all they’ve got to make it through. 
So quit making it about yourself and keep this in your heart -
your songs will always be greater than you.
