When tomorrow is near to hand
     and new winter winds are blowing in,
Will you dream of the coming days
     or will you look back to where you been?
Are you caught in the hinterland,
     that strange place from which there's no escape,
Or heading down to Durango
     with a guitar and a dusty cape?

When running down an endless road
     with the hard rain beating on your face,
The only thing you can think of
     is a land which hands out saving grace.
In the distance there's candle light
     behind shadows of another form,
And maybe there'll be someone there
     who offers you shelter from the storm.

Sometimes a life changes its course
     like the mime that dances to and fro;
One minute it's full steam ahead,
     then suddenly there's nowhere to go.
And then, when you're in review,
     you may find so much that you regret;
But still it shines, that light recalled,
     the sun's setting but it's not dark yet.

Oh, but for all the dreams you've had
     and for all the places you have seen,
Those open roads still call to you
     while each day changes life's painted theme.
You're content to be travelling on,
     moving through your life without a home,
And you'll hear all the stories told
     of one unknown, like a rolling stone.
