Lady Liberty Cries I could be wrong, but I’m alarmed. "Stop those refugees at the border, They are poisoning our society. They are cruel and such a bother. How dare they corrupt our civility." It seems these thoughts are alive, Upon the harsh political winds, Conquering through fear and distrust, And drowning the good in all of us. There are tears in Lady Liberty's eyes, As an eerie pall falls over her light, Must that glowing freedom lamp die? Can freedom shine on that dark night? Do we mock the gracious words at her feet: "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door?" Have we snuffed out that light? Have we closed that open door? Are we no longer compassionate, To those who long to be free? Are the sacrifices we must make, Too harsh that others must lack. Have we accumulated so much stuff? Has sharing become repulsive? Have we forgotten our history, Taking land from Indigenous tribes, Who more than most lived free, In a land of plenty under spacious skies? Are we the nation of the innocent, Bearing no collective quilt or wrong? Is the beam in our nation's eye so large, That we can't see another's plight? Such thoughts and actions did yesteryear, Would have turned masses away. So great a catastrophe would mean, That most of us would not be here today. Immigrant strength built this nation. Its worth is seen from shore to shore In the name of human respect and love, We must maintain the light and open the door. Immigration and hatred isn't a wise mixture, For people who seek freedom from tyranny. Patient wisdom by leaders is paramount, To dry the tears in Lady Liberty's eyes. Then again, I could be wrong or misinformed. Others make an engaging rebuttal against My views and beliefs, but what is the truth? In this age of information, misinformation flows. Yet, I see a weeping Lady at America's door. Never seen her shed tears like this before. Are they tears for freedom's goodbyes? I get nervous when Lady Liberty cries!
