Poem

There is a cabin in the woods
There is a light upon the shade
Smoke drifts slowly out the chimney
From the fire that they had made
There is food upon the table
As they go down upon their knees
They're giving thanks to God above
For all they have that meets their needs

They had buried Grandpa Moses
Back in the spring of fifty-five
He was the one that had taught them
Ev'rything they'd need to survive
He had been hard but always fair
And he prayed that they'd understand
That there's only three things to respect
That be God, family, and the land

There have been doctors and teachers
Quite a few travelled far and wide
What e'er was done by family
Was done with hand on heart and pride
Only one had remained behind
And continued farming the land
For eighty years he carried on
Until he could no longer stand

Now the shutters on the windows
Have long rotted into the dust
The weather vane that swung freely
Has been frozen solid with rust
Half of the doors do not exist
There are no remnants of handmade tweeds
The wooden crosses in the yard
Are being strangled by the weeds

That old cabin's nearly falling down
Most of the family has now passed
Yet there's one that is still alive
And he's planned to come back at last
There's one cross in the corner yard
It has no letters on its frame
Soon will come forth words from his will
And on that cross will be his name
