MISFIT

"I have been a stranger in a strange land"

Today I am free, in a land that I recognise
Unlike that time in that very strange land
And as a stranger, almost all was a surprise
Everything so difficult for me to understand
Nothing of substance, and all was so bland
All around me would just a smile and nod
Comfortable with average, nothing grand
A society dedicated to quite another God

There was no one thing that I could despise
All would merely extend their empty hand
Just a blank stare and a dullness of the eyes
As if all was externally meticulously planned
And individuality or initiative was banned
My feet merely following where others trod
And warm tides left no footprints in the sand
A society dedicated to quite another God

None seemed concerned at how time flies
All the people were fit, healthy and tanned
Yet somehow it just felt like a clever disguise
And nobody was prepared to make a stand
Even the occasional laughter sounded canned
But every moment in that place felt so odd
Their symbols all looked like an ampersand
A society dedicated to quite another God

I refused to join in and wear that armband
As I wore a tattoo with the sign of the rod
As time wore on my distaste would expand
