Poem
The shades are drawn, and the paint is peeling on the façade, the door is cracked open as though the person inside is ready to run He lies there positioning himself into a relaxed state, wondering if she can sense the anxiety in him will she leave, or will she stay? He doesn’t approach the door to meet her when she arrives, too afraid that he may be seen from the outside There is no sign hung on the door asking to not be disturbed, he knows why he is here and what his plans are for her He had sown his wild oats into his land of lies so long ago, or he thought that he had but looking at her now he doesn’t know She isn’t the one he married, the one that made him settle down, so why is another here with him in this moment, now? This isn’t his first-time rebelling but it’s the first time he has crossed the line, the one where everything is teetering between not alright and fine He has cheated in his mind, he has flirted with his eyes, but he never has placed his hands or lips on another, at least not until tonight This land of lies isn’t new territory for him, but he stops for just a second to reconsider before he dives right in He plans out his speech to her as he picks up the phone, tonight someone is stealing second and third and sliding into her home He doesn’t have the strength to walk away, the temptation it’s all too much, maybe he does it for the recognition to himself, or possibly just the rush So tonight, he takes off the band of gold at least it helps him with the lie, the one that he is telling himself as he gazes into her eyes As his lips crash into hers he knows there is no going back, he can’t rewind the last few months he is the one that set this trap And after the sin is over and he lies there in all of his shame, she gets up to leave his bed and the sad part is he doesn’t even know her whole name He tries to smooth things over and tend to his land of lies, but he knows that she can see the truth there wavering in his eyes So, she collects herself and her things and she walks out the door, passing a window and a reflection of a girl she doesn’t know anymore While he lies in the darkness and dreams up another lie, for when he sees the one tomorrow that he should have been with tonight He is unaware but there is a surprise awaiting him, the door to his home has been bolted shut so that he may not come in On this door there is a sign, and it does ask not to be disturbed, and nailed to it is a letter professing all of her hurt Enclosed inside the note there is a gold wedding band, she took hers off because he removed his all for a one-night stand He knows that they are through, there is no turning back, she will move on from his land of lies and the respect that he does lack And the other woman, the one that he risked all of this for, where is she now? Not here by his side, standing outside their door He is all alone with just his guilt and shame, all because he wanted to be with a woman that he wanted to distance himself from, by not knowing her full name Well now he knows her name and it is one that he’ll never forget, because his land of lies has sealed it to his memory where temptation started it.
