Poem
We look more beautiful when we smile; Our lives are presented as perfect before the world. No pain,no worries, no debts,no regrets,no fears and no bad demons. With a smile,we console our broken hearts that we shall be alright, And our wounded souls that it is okay. And yes! It is okay that we smile beyond our inner circle, And return to our hell of agony within our perimeters. It is one mask we all wear. We borrow the mask to tell our people that we are ready to give them a shoulder to lean on, And so,with us,they share their sorrows while our own boils past the brim. Deep down,we are dying slowly afraid to take a step back, Waking up to a new dawn comes as a surprise as it is with rain in the desert. We have been eaten up and smashed beyond repair, But to fit in your world, all we have to do is to smile, To be welcomed as healthy and mentally stable! What happens when we cross back behind our walls and doors and curtains? It is a life different from what we give you for we give you what you want, But it takes our own to notice that we are just putting up a show when our huts are on fire! Behind our walls,we stand naked with our agony written allover our lives. Behind our closed doors,we kneel down to pray begging God to give us a chance to see tomorrow, For we feel too unprepared to depart from the world. Behind our curtains,we struggle not to come face to face with our pains; We fight hard not to listen to the voices of weakness that keep reminding us that we ain't worth love; that we never shall make it out of this storm! It is the misery that our smile saves us from just for a little while. We wake up each day, leave our sadness and brokenness on our beds; And as we go out to join you in the real world where we are expected to be like you, We close our doors behind us never to turn back lest we may meet one of those ugly demons haunting us! The mask! That mask; we wear all day and none of you can even realize the line between makeup and our true skins; For you want us to be like you inorder to be with you; and we play the cards right before you. We breakdown whenever we return to our premises, We put ourselves together as we leave the next day, which is always a chance meeting! It becomes a routine, and that mask is now a permanent garment we must not let go of. We smile; we wear the smile to mask it up; and we all do this. Only God,who reads our inner hearts and spirits like a book knows how hard we struggle to fight against gravity!
