Poem

Rosy sunshades

You want me all to yourself
But wonder why I'm so reluctant
I don't even get to have me all to myself
Why should I be prepared to allow you this privilege

I am torn between work and family
All my obligations and commitments
But all you want is a holiday
To fulfil some crazy fantasy

We are not a couple
We don't have a future chance
I'm still treading water
Getting over a difficult divorce

Why can't you understand it?
Why can't you see the truth?
Take off those rosy sunshades
And accept that we are through

I have no more to give you
I wish I could say it wasn't so
I only have enough energy to live right now
And focus on my self-care and growth

Maybe one day things will be different
Maybe one day we'll get our time
But for right now we are travelling 
On very different highways

I need to heal all of me
I need to become whole and free
I need to change my life path
I need to know hope and peace

My self-care isn't selfish
My reluctance is no rejection
I hope that you know I care for you
No matter what your perceptions

No one can change how someone feels
No one can fix insight and memory
We all choose what we want to see
We all choose what we believe

Take this moment as my peace offering
Take the memories of our love and care
Build goodness and compassion (if you can)
And know that you are part of my soul

This may not be roses and rainbows
But it's certainly not doom and gloom
I wish you the best on your journey
And I will always remember you
