Poem

A SONNET IN THE WIND - NW

“Tell me how you love me,” she begged him,
As they walked beneath the harvest moon.
But, as usual, he got tongue-tied.
He was not very good with words.
“Tell me in a sonnet then,” she suggested,
“Written on scented notepaper.”
Each day she waited at the gate
To catch the postman on his round.
Each day the postman touched his cap,
Bidding her good morning as he passed.
Then, on day four, a windy day,
She spotted on the breeze
A sheet of paper, just too high to reach.
Perhaps he was romantic after all.
Joyfully she followed it
Down the street, through the wrought iron gate
And into the tree-lined park.
Sheltered by the trees, the wind dropped
And the note came circling gently to the ground.
Eagerly she pounced on it
And read the legend written there.
“Two pints of milk, one loaf of bread,
Butter, Sugar, strawberry jam.”
Fourteen items, listed one-by-one.
She was not impressed with the sonnet.
The syllable count was entirely wrong.
