Poem
I remember the day we met. I was just a kitten, lost in the bramble bushes crying out for someone to help me. I had been there since the day before after wandering away from the barn where I was born. I left the barn to look for my mother who had left several days before and had never returned. I was hungry and thirsty and so afraid. I had almost given up hope of being rescued. Then I heard you calling me. "Here Kitty, Kitty, Kitty," I couldn't see you, and you couldn't see me, so I meowed and meowed as loud as I could. I could hear the bramble bushes snapping as you tried to find me. I tried to follow the sound of your voice, but I couldn't get through those thorny bushes. So I meowed louder and louder as those bushes kept snapping in my direction. I could hear the desperation in your voice as you cried out to God to help you find me. Then high above me, the brambles parted and there you were, my Guardian Angel. You lifted me up and out of the bramble bushes that had imprisoned me for so long. Both of us were scratched and bleeding. You held me above the brambles as you beat your way out. You twisted your ankle descending the deep ditch that led back onto the road. I felt safe in your arms as you hobbled to your car and drove me to your home. There, you immediately gave me water and food. Then you tended to my scratches and made a bed for me. The next day you took me to the DR. to ensure I was okay. Every day as the years passed, you took care of me. You loved me, and I loved you. But my life span was much shorter than yours. Twelve years later, an undetected blood clot took me from you. I know you have shed a million tears for me, but I take comfort in knowing that soon your grief will give way to a smile when you remember all the beautiful moments we shared. I am now happy in heaven and take comfort in knowing one day, we will be together again. Written: June 14, 2022 Poetry Personification Contest Sponsored by: Constance La France
