Poem

Losing a friend is truly the worst 
that’s happened to me yet,
especially when I see your face
and voice filled with regret. 
A face I hoped to see each day,
always in your smiling way.
A voice I’d know in any crowd,
no matter be it soft or loud.

I could see it in you if somehow
you caught a break,
the person deep inside of you 
instead of just the snake.
If someone just believed in you
in any circumstance,
maybe you’d believe it too
and gave yourself a chance.

I think you knew early on
that I could see your game,
masterfully playing your role
without an ounce of shame. 
The times we shared 
when lies were spared
I honestly thought true,
I saw something special 
past the bullsh**  part of you.

Something different drew me in,
I knew you from the start,
but foolishly I convinced me
you wouldn’t break my heart.
I grew blind while wined and dined 
awed by your snake charm,
but I thought I was special, 
so why should I fear harm?

I knew you were capable 
of doing such a thing,
but I didn’t think 
that I would ever 
be the one you’d sting.
Then one day you turned away 
because the time had come to pay,
a promise made in trust as friends 
would drag us to a bitter end.

My friend if you could just believe 
the image you project,
aground of morals, confident pride 
and integrity to protect. 
Instead you hide, still terrified,
that you just might succeed 
to be the one your biggest fan
believes you still can be.

Though I’m still in disbelief, 
lost inside a grayish grief,
my dignity would win the day
through strength and courage to walk away.
Despite the pain there’s still some things
I know I won’t forget,
‘cause losing a friend is truly the worst 
that’s happened to me yet.
