Poem
-From the Passover musical that I wrote, "On Eagles' Wings." My sister Amy Grace helped me with this. This was the song of the Hebrew slaves in Egypt- Each day we wake Before dawn’s break And go out to the field If bone you break No rest you take We’re longing to be healed From day to day We have no say About what we shall do You must obey Whate’er they say And if you don’t, poor you! And we toil during sickness And we toil during pain And however hard we work we know That we’ll receive no gain And we’re aching from the hardship And we drag our feet and mope And we pine away for lack of–- Throughout each day We stomp on clay We shake our heads and sigh Our legs are sure They can’t stomp more We force them to comply In heat and cold More bricks we mold Our work can’t satisfy If thirst, no sip Mistake, then whip Are rules we’re living by And we toil during heartache Through the harshest heat and then Even when the work is done we know That work will come again And we long to leave this nightmare With our lives we barely cope And we ache all day for lack of–- One more brick to make One more step to take One more stinging lash One more ugly gash One more piercing yelp One more cry for help And we rise before the sunrise And we work until sun’s set And still even in the darkness Somehow work will find us yet And we search around for some wise way To loose the tyrant’s rope But we can’t; we cry for lack of–- Yes, we rise before the sunrise And we work until sun’s set And still even in the darkness Somehow work will find us yet And we search around for some wise way To loose the tyrant’s rope But we can’t; we cry for lack of–- Hope! The word is hope!
