Our old friend Merriam-Webster tells us that the definition of common sense is: sound and prudent judgment based on a simple perception of the situation or facts.

English Language Learners’ definition of common sense is the ability to think and behave in a reasonable way and to make good decisions.

Kids Definition of common sense is ordinary good sense and judgment.

Hey, Kids. Thanks for zeroing us in!

I think we’re beginning to get it!

Nevertheless, beyond the definition is the sad truth about common sense.

How underrated is common sense; it’s undervalued, underestimated, unappreciated, and misunderstood.

How rare common sense; its use is infrequent, sporadic, erratic, and unusual.

How little practiced common sense; its measure can be called petite, slight, tiny, miniature, diminutive.

How unwise not to use common sense; it’s foolish, rash, ill-advised, reckless, imprudent.

How much better the world would be by the exercise of common sense. What if it became a daily exercise?

Voltaire reminded us that common sense is both more uncommon and more desirable in leaders than mere intelligence. 

Common sense! I think that’s what my father meant when he said, “Use you noggins, young’uns.”
