Poem
The Forgotten They sit alone wishing the walls could hear their crying They see the clock tick minute by minute, day by day Another lonely day As they continue to breathe Nothing can numb this pain They are forgotten and alone The world moves on and the carousel goes up and down She sits alone in a women’s shelter, as the unfamiliar noise keeps her scared Trying to figure out how she ended up here Her mind riddled with questions of what is next? How can she be safe again? Who will hear the depths of her soul’s pain? She longs to start again and she continues to breathe Nothing can numb this pain She is forgotten and alone The world spirals on and the carousel has thrown her off They sit on the streets trying to stay warm Someone offers a cloak A kind word, or a brief smile, a bite to eat The coldness of the night sets in As they settle in As they continue to breathe Nothing can numb this pain They are forgotten and alone The world moves on and the carousel goes round and round The voices in their head tell them they are no good The voices tell them they deserve no better The voices scream they are not loved… not enough They would be better off dead As they continue to breathe Nothing can numb this pain They are forgotten and alone The world moves on and the carousel goes slowly around They have seen the winds of time cruelly take apart their soul Their body fails and no end to the pain They have lost their best friends The pain is so great because their children have forgotten Yet they continue to breathe Nothing can numb this pain They are forgotten and alone The world goes on and the carousel grinds to a halt. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven (Matthew 5:3) Grace Daub August 23, 2021
