Poem

Evening shadows lengthen
 as the day says her goodbyes. 
The sun is a brilliant, glowing orb 
sinking in the western sky. 
Fireflies flit and dance 
in the rosy glow of twilight. 
My day is closing as I savor the first sounds 
of the symphony of the night. 

A lone wolf cries in the sweet night air; 
an owl sweeps past on silent wings. 
The creatures of the night emerge, 
quietly, from their hidden dens. 
The hum of the cicada sings 
through the surrounding hills and valleys. 
Field mice scurry through the grass 
to hide beneath the veranda. 

It’s nights like these that stir my soul, 
like a beautiful waking dream. 
Only at night can you hear these songs 
that drift on every breeze. 
I‘ve never feared these mysterious sounds 
that others try to flee; 
they fill the empty hours 
with their enchanted, haunting melodies. 

No one should fear to venture out 
in the hours after dark. 
It’s nothing like the daytime 
with its cacophony and noise. 
To listen to these deep delights, 
you need only close your eyes
while nature perfects a symphony 
under moonlit, evening skies.
