Poem
Day-223 “I Am Your Constitution” In the wee hours of the night There came a pounding on my door Up from my bed I rose Who’s that pounding on my door? Why are you pounding on my door? Wake up! Wake up! It’s raining hard outside And I, not a cover for my head Let me in! Let me in! Lightning bolts are searing the sky Thunder’s fury is raging mad Tears are falling from my eyes Who’s that pounding on my door? Who’s that pounding on my door? In night cloth bare I stumbled to the door Only to find a silhouette Running circles in my brain And back to bed I cowered In my deep night slumber I heard a rapping at my door Up from my bed I rose Who’s that rapping at my door? Why are you rapping at my door? Surely tis not another dream I heard a mournful whisper Let me in, Let me in Men are coming! Men are coming! I need shelter from their swords Let me in, Let me in Again I stumbled to the door And peered upon a ghostly scene Was surely not a dream Marching in midnight mist Ten thousand men had gathered steam Marching to my door I heard a mournful whisper From somewhere high Whereupon I spied an eagle perched Clenched in his beak An “Olive Branch” Again I heard that mournful whisper Let me in! Let me in! Men are coming to take this branch Help me please, or I will die Ten thousand men are gathering steam An insurrection coming to your steep With that I flung wide the door And in the Eagle flew And settled on the mantle Above the warming coals I bolted the door And closed the shutters As they pounded and cursed Unleashing their steam A window was breeched The Eagle Screamed An ungodly screech And to the glass he flew Beating back the intruders With his olive branch And I, the book held high Began to read to those inside and out And all who began to doubt “WE THE PEOPLE of the United States” In order to form a more perfect union” .................................. There was much blood On our steps that day But I and the eagle Pushed back and broke their backs As I recall those powerful words Written in blood by many of our kind And etched in our souls for immortal time I am reminded of how powerful I really am and the podium on which I lie For all the men and women of these United States This is the book on which “United” we stand. The oath some take to lead us through Many a trying time. Lon 1/21/2021 #327
