Poem

I had a job interview, and ignored what my mentor said.
She had said “Try not to be so ….”
“Me?” I guessed. She laughed. “Exactly!”
I blew in, and they asked me to tell them about myself.
So I did.

The main guy, the principal, looked everywhere but at me.
Another counselor and a teacher watched me, but did not smile.
I had no idea how I was doing. It was the weirdest interview.
I thought I was delightful, but maybe I wasn’t.

When I paused the principal gulped and said they had questions.
He started to ask the first couple and he stopped.
You already answered this one, and that one, and this one, and…
His face was red, as was the top of his head.

The veteran counselor gave me a scenario and asked what I would do.
I would call you, I told her. She started to smile but caught herself.
The other lady grinned flat out, which I thought was a bit encouraging.
So I concentrated on her, trying to get another smile.

At the end, the principal said “We have lots of qualified candidates,
so we will be getting in touch with you on Friday.”
I said, “okay, here are my numbers. I am leaving for Chicago
on Wednesday, so you will have to call me on my cell phone after that.”

I shook everyone’s hands and left.
The two women later became my good friends.
The veteran counselor said she and the teacher were staring at each other.
They both wanted me, but the principal was an opposite personality.
He is as shy and quiet and timid as I am outgoing.
She said we were both wondering how to convince him
that I would be a good fit.

He looked at both of them, grinned and said “I think we’ve just
found our school counselor.”
She said they both burst into laughter, relieved.
It truly was a miracle, she told me.
I thought so too.
