Darkness enfolded me in an ebony blanket Of soft nocturnal feelings, whispers of wisdom Shading my world with blackest reminiscences Gentle insights into reflections of a promise Phenomenal grace captivating my senses ~ As the night envelops me in it’s shroud of dusk I notice one mysterious creature who is so alone She perches firmly upon an old oak tree’s branch Resolute in her purpose to be the wise bird Amid the nightly visitors of this silent place ~ Mystery surrounds her with it’s fiery glow Swathing her in a delicate light of richest hope Alone, she makes a statement of all she stands for Loneliness, melancholy, wisdom and cryptic peace Sagacity suits her spirit and colors her in inspiration ~ Shaded in the obscurity of the blackest evening Moon and stars glisten close to the heavens Leaving her with thoughts of pure enchantment Blessed dreams call out to her with their delights Leaving her with anticipation for the journey in sight ~ Twilight brings her out to the limbs where she lives To give off her wise old chant of “who who who” And leaves the other nocturnal creatures with the assurance That she knows the best way and shows them truth Which graces their nighttime realm with true prudence ~ As the dusky black sky changes to a dark thick enough to cut I am reminded why I love to see this majestic creature A shrewd and clever fowl who desires nothing more than The harmony and calm of a silent night to encourage her With beliefs in God’s universe being filled with graceful reveries ~ Breathing through the murky clouds drifting across the heavens I am blessed to see her for who she truly is, a beautiful creature Mystifying and enigmatic, sighing out echoes of prayers for peace Amid the place where she rests her impressive breast against The solid bark of this grand old tree who calls out for her dignity Bird Poetry Contest Sponsored by: Constance La France July 9, 2020
