I’m not sure what you expected me to be
What path you were hoping that I would follow
You tried to keep my spirit from wandering free
Mould me into someone completely hollow.

I’m not sure how you expected me to be
What plans you were making for my tomorrow
You tried hard to control the essence that is me
Keep me from heights and depths of joy and sorrow.

You kept me in the middle of nowhere
You forced me to wear those blinkers in the sun
You didn’t listen, didn’t seem to care
You prevented my growth before it had begun.

Why couldn’t you give me a helping hand
You had the ways if you’d had the mind
If only you had tried to start to understand
That loving freely pays, it doesn’t only have to bind.
So many times I’d hoped you’d notice
The lost look that was always in my eyes
It doesn’t matter how thick the sugar coat is
A pill’s a bitter taste and is always hard to disguise.

I’m not sure where you expected me to be
When I grew stronger and old enough to know
Did you think you’d always get me to agree
Well now I’m determined to stand up and show
