A few weeks ago I had a dream wherein my Chinese wife dyed her black hair blonde; then I woke up and told her I had just dreamt she became a blonde. Well, she was a bit indignant, saying 'Why would I ever do that?". Then I woke up from THAT dream, into this long dream we call life. Now it's rare that I have a dream within a dream, but it made me aware of something I've long considered: have we all lived before, but can't recall our past lives anymore than we can remember most of the dreams we have: yet each dream is its own little reality, and we live and think and feel in those dreams. Some are joyful or even fantastic (I still miss my childhood dreams where I could fly: 60 years on I can still feel the joy of being free of gravity, of soaring using only my arms as wings). Some dreams are scary, nightmares. And some are moral: last night I had a dream where I found out my employer was a heroin dealer-- do I report him and risk myself and my family, or just keep working in the legal part of his business (I woke up before deciding).
Now for a long time I've had intimations of reincarnation: something spooky that happened at 17 (when I was still an unbeliever) on the Gettysburg battlefield, the 'knowing' someone you just met, either liking or disliking them for no discernible reason . And every mother I've ever asked has said their kids came INTO this world with a distinct personality. In a way, much of what we are drawn to or repelled by seems to predate our births:I knew I loved Mozart's music the 1st time I heard it:it was not an acquired taste.
But I long wondered why we don't remember past lives if we, our souls, did live them. Dreams may be the answer: each night we average 4-6 dreams,each one quite real as we dream it, yet most are totally forgotten by the time we wake (people have told me, 'I don't dream'-- I say, 'sure you do', for studies show that dreaming keeps us sane-- yes, you can get 8 hours of sleep but if you're deprived of dreaming by being awakened every time REM--rapid eye movement- is detected, you'll soon start becoming psychotic as though sleep deprived. Our 'crazy' dreams keep us sane!)
The other 1/2 of the world has long believed in reincarnation (and karma, the force determining the next life in re-birth). But there have also been hints of it in the sacred writings of the 3 great monotheistic religions of the West. And rebirth does not exclude heaven (and hell) as the ultimate incarnations of the soul--all such waits till we awake.
