Dear budding poet, Regarding modern poetry this is a result of poets such as you redesigning forms of poetry written through the ages by different nationalities, famous and just ordinary people like you and me. When composing there are points that are important such as, Writing poetry should always be a pleasure, never a chore, A poem has two objectives, first to give the writer enjoyment second to give the reader pleasure. There are no rights or wrongs when writing poetry but there are certain rules to follow. Read or listen to accomplished poets works old and modern. Fall in love with your dictionary, make every word have a meaning. Use every tool available, spell check, grammar check, cliche checker, syllable counter. Write, edit, leave then edit again, never post until you are satisfied with your work. Substance is more important than style, best writes come from the heart. Use your emotions, life experiences, knowledge of the subject you’re writing about. Always carry a note pad there’s a poem, an experience to write about wherever you are. As in any walk of life you will only get out what you put in, contribute constructive comments, accept constructive criticism. Finding poetry has given me so much, all of my life I have only read one book cover to cover due to my dyslexia, so poetry has not only given me the opportunity to read but also to contribute which has changed my life. My favourite themes are nature, politics, environment, people, peace, emotions, animals and the countryside. There are many sources of inspiration such as, poets Garret, shadowpoetry.com, poetrysoup, rhymezone.com and how many syllables.Com. The favourite poems that I’ve written are, I am dumb perhaps dumber - limerick Big Ben-Iconic concrete. - concrete Broken hearted farewell Dad - Haibun Memories are immortal - Iambic Pentameter My son - rhyme Pictures of you. - lyric Friendless - couplets Isolation in paradise - epic Snowdrops - sonnet The walk - loop poetry. My route into writing was through composing verses in celebration cards for my family, this interest increased so purchased an online course, joined a poetry school, then online poetry community, I write for pleasure, the pleasure comes from my readers comments, I also expect criticism and disappointment, this makes me better. My initial inspiration came from two poets, both First World War poets, Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon. The book that I would suggest to read is, A poetry handbook by Mary Oliver. 6/15/2018 Tips for modern poetry to budding poets of all ages contest Sponsored by Line Gauthier.
