Poem

You think the flowers grow for us?
The daffodils, the brief crocus
Revealing life’s relentless thirst
As pansies leap and tulips burst?

As fields of daisies stand exposed
As lilies nod in languid pose
You think each flower strives to be
A wonder - just for you or me?

And roses that astound our sense
Exquisite hue, profound incense
May take us back to youth’s delights
And memories of passion’s rites

Such cherished little gifts of grace
Frail delicacies of this place
Exist for more than you or I
Persist though we will wilt and die

When we are gone the flowers will grow
The birds still sing, the rivers flow
The world in splendor shall endure
And all the heavens seem secure

And everything that we once touched
That in our mortal cravings clutched
Will come and go and come again
And someone else’s thoughts sustain

‘Til in their season each will fade
Forsaking life’s brief masquerade
Yet with each flower we still may hold
A solace for the troubled soul

For though one day we all must pass
(No thing that lives can truly last)
A flower may still the heart remind
Of beauty ... someone left behind
