War poetry is poetry that responds to war, whether by describing battle, showing life on the home front, mourning the dead, or questioning the causes and meaning of conflict. It may be patriotic, grieving, angry, satirical, or deeply anti-war. Although the term is often associated with poets of the First World War, it can apply to poems about any war or military conflict.

Mud on the boots, and the letter folded small,
A name in chalk beside the barracks wall;
