Monosyllable

A monosyllable is a word with only one syllable, such as heart, stone, or wind. In poetry, monosyllables matter because they are easy to count in meter and can make a line sound plain, forceful, or clipped, especially when a poet uses several of them in a row.

Example

Stone, wind, frost, and fire
shape the path home.
