How to Become a Haibun Pro

Haibun is a form of poetry, creation accredited to Japanese poet Basho, is a section of prose that is followed by a typical haiku. Typically, the prose isn't too lengthy, but is still able to establish a clear theme, along with potential for a story arc and other elements woven in. I'm going to give you some advice so you can become a pro (or whatever I, a random internet poet named Florence, deem to be a pro), and become confident to create the haibuns of your dreams. 

1. Make the section of prose your foundation. Feel free to litter it with description, complex metaphors, and other creative literary devices. The prose will act as a way to set the scene for your haiku and, if you will, roll out a "red carpet" for a potential pivot in the following work. 
2. Don't be afraid to be unique. Prose is just like writing you'd see if you cracked open your typical book from off the shelf; there is a lacking of strict meter or syllable requirements. This gives you so much freedom, so be sure to use it wisely and help make your work stand out.
3. Let your haiku act like a bridge. It should either reinforce your central theme in a stronger way, or possibly add something new, change it up a bit, or even act as a plot twist. As always, be sure to be creative and let your voice shine!
