Antero De Quental Biography | Poet

Antero de Quental was born on the island of São Miguel in 1842 and became one of Portugal’s most influential literary and philosophical voices of the nineteenth century. Educated in law at the historic University of Coimbra, he quickly distinguished himself not only through academic brilliance, but through his restless intellectual curiosity and revolutionary ideas.

Quental’s poetry and prose reflected the influence of major European thinkers such as Eduard von Hartmann, Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, and Ernest Renan.
