Discovered my love for poetry, and literature in general, as a senior in high school and it developed into a lifelong passion which has provided much inspiration and enjoyment. I began writing in my mid twenties.

In general, I am just a great lover of life. I am married and we have a blended family of six children (one who is now in Heaven), eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. If you read many of my writings, you will discover the most important relationship in my life is with my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

The Scent of Water Contest Judged

Blog Posted:7/23/2014 1:22:00 PM

My first contest is completed and judged. This has been a fun and learning experience which requires a good deal of time. Thank you to everyone who entered. My goal was to award placements to the top third of the entries, considering artistic and technical merit, as well as, the degree to which each entry met the contest theme of "renewal." At the time of writing this blog, I have no idea who did not place. I am glad to see some "newer" members on the soup in my list. I know how encouraging it was to me to place in a contest when I first joined Poetry Soup.

Wherever you placed or did not place in my contest, keep writing and entering (if you enjoy the competitions). Each judge will exert some personal taste in the judging process. I am aware that some members do not think that the technical aspects of good writing should enter into the judging process, but they are important. Think of your poem as a canvas and you are a painter. If you pay no attention to how the paint is applied, you may not get your artistic concept across to the viewers. Writing a poem is much the same process; your words are the paint and the technical aspects (punctuation, grammar, etc.) are how you apply your paint to the canvas. I will know what you meant to say by the way you "apply your paint to the canvas."

Congratulations to Andrea Dietrich for taking the top place. I am looking forward to sending her the promised prize. I will send you a soup mail, Andrea.

Since the name of the poems was all the same, I am just listing the author's name and the placement.

Thank you all for your encouraging response to my first contest...the judging part is not easy, and I am sure some people will disagree with my choices and placements. I do not always agree with how other sponsors judge. It is a fact of life that we are all different. Aren't we glad about that? How boring life would be if we all saw everything exactly the same.

Yes, it does have the wow factor...I went back and forth between yours, Craig's and another one for first place...chose yours as first because of the strong melodic quality. Thanks for the great, encouraging response.

Thank you, Dave. Wow, if every one would sponsor their own contest, they would learn so much--maybe even cut down some of the complaining. I enjoyed it. I have since discovered that two of my favorite poets--maybe more-- were not among my placements. That is why I want to judge blind. There were several more entries in my second round, and I struggled with including them all. But, I chose to keep the list shorter.

Thanks for all the support you give, not only to me...I see you doing it with many other poets.

Thanks SO much, Faye, this was a grand surprise to see today! Congrats to all your winners. I know just using good mechanics is not the only thing that makes a good poem. There are many other aspects than just the technical stuff, but I just love to see the whole package, and I am honored you felt I accomplished that with your contest.

Craig, I have to get off now, but I can't wait to go through the winners' list and read your poem even if I already saw it! (can't remember right now) Congrats to you.
