I've always wanted to title my "Bio", "Highlights of a Low-Life" and I'll be damned if I didn't Google that title and it has already been used by someone  else. Figures!

So, here's a bit about me: my name is Chan Hurst. I've been writing poetry,  short-stories, essays and memoirs for 25 years. My forte, though, is "Rhyme"  and I consider it to be the only "true" form of poetry. I know: quite a  debatable, controversial and fascist belief, but this is my fervent conviction,  for which I am unapologetic and shall never waver.

My greatest poetic  influences include Poe, Shelley, Keats and Dickinson. If you are looking for  "odes to nature" or "grandma" or some other mundane topic, I am definitely NOT  the poet to read. I write what's in my Soul, and stay true to my  aesthetic.

I'm 35, gay, partnered for the past 5 years and married in my  own mind and heart. I have 5 children: 2 dogs and 3 cats. I am physically and  mentally disabled, suffer from numerous mental illnesses, am an addict/alcoholic  who also suffers with chronic pain. I'm a highly opinionated introvert with a  staggering IQ (I'm not modest when it comes to intelligence). What you are about  to read now is a paper I wrote as an introduction about myself to my fellow  classmates in one of my many failed attempts at higher  education:

I am of the opinion that unless you are  some kind of celebrity, no one wants to hear your life story.  Since I find  99.9% of the human race utterly uninteresting, I have no desire to hear about  your plights or triumphs so I don’t expect you to want to hear mine. I’m a  misanthropist, damn it. A jaded Cynic. Would you expect anything less?

Ok, OK! You asked for it. You want to know so badly? Well, then, I’ll  tell you. I’m a self-professed geek. Yes, I acknowledge as much. It seems that  in today’s age, being a geek is much more chic and “in” than it used to be.  Thank goodness media expands our limits and perceptions of “coolness”. I mean,  hats off to such influences as “Big Bang Theory”, right? You remember all those  reasons you made fun of nerds and geeks in school? Yeah, well, apply them to me.  And may the Force be with you as you live long and prosper. Insert “smiley face”  emoticon.

Now I will cryptically and enigmatically tell you how un-exactly deep  my well of coolness allegedly is. This will all sound pretty flakyy so feel free  to roll your eyes or LOL wherever you see fit.  Ok, you ready? Thought not,  but here we go anyway: I am that person, that friend of a friend of a friend,  who has seen and experienced the most indescribably incredible things your mind  can fathom on dark and stormy nights.  I’ve had the kind of close  encounters that those weird people on TV swear and attest are true. I’ve  underwent the kind of mind-blowing revelations that those levitating Tibetan  monks or jungle medicine men have probably known for eons. A hit of Timothy  Leary on the end of your tongue on a bright and sunny spring day brings the  universe and life into perspective. But so does walking in the Shoes of  Insanity!

What else? Hmmmmm. Ok, well, like many of you, I’ve had a number of  adventures in my 34 years on earth. Like what? Patience, young Padawan; I’m  getting to that. For example: I lived overseas with the Kiwis for a time in New  Zealand. I’ve lived high on the hog, but also roamed skid row (but not with  Sebastian Bach). My fashionable myriad of mental maladies have shown me the  inside of The Cuckoo’s Nest on more than one occasion. I’ve nearly died more  times than I can attempt to count. I have climbed the heights of pure Nirvana  and suffered tragedy of the Shakespearean kind. I’ve had organs removed and a  toe amputated. Loved and lost; hated and gained. I’ve been locked up, tied down  and shot at. Just to name a few...

I mean, so I got kicked out of a private Christian school in the tenth  grade; hasn’t that happened to everyone? Is going to class on acid really that  big of a deal in the grand scheme of things? Does it really matter that I almost  killed an up and coming country music star back in the 90’s? Or that I used to  dabble in the occult and dress like Dracula? Why are you shaking your head at  me? Who are you, Saint Peter?

Like most of you, I’ve had various careers over the years; everything  from the educator of your children (I know, someone did indeed drop the ball  when they hired me) and street pharmacist (the money was good!). Years ago, I  enjoyed being the night manager at a hotel (so what if I routinely fell asleep  and slept with the guests?). Once, I had the distinct displeasure of working for  UPS as a truck loader (if any of your packages got smashed or were lost, I  apologize). I’ve been a cashier one too many times (my bad if you got  short-changed). Flipped my share of burgers (what do you mean yours was “raw”?).  In 2006 I worked with the criminally insane (I know, right up my alley!) but  quit two weeks later after I was nearly choked to death. Yeah, I’ve done a  little of everything. What am I doing now you ask? Wouldn’t you like to  know!

Oh, lest I forget, can I get an “AMEN!” if you, too, have perpetrated  embarrassing acts that made your father wince and your mother cry? Can I get a  “HELL YEAH!” if you’ve partied too much and wound up in the slammer or  slept with someone who looked much better when you were drunk? Can I get a fist  bump from all my fellow “He-Whores” and “Jessebels”? No? What a bunch of prudish  pansies! Like I’m the only one who’s gotten too loaded and told everybody I  could play the bongos with my feet? Don’t act like you’ve never passed out in  public or urinated on the side of a church!

Like everybody else, I could go on and on, yadda yadda yadda with some  blah blah blah, but I think you get the gist of it. I'm a weirdo; a freak and  geek, but damn proud of it. I am unconventional, controversial, unorthodox and  fascist. Hope that's not a problem for you lol.

My Name is Mud

Blog Posted:10/29/2013 11:05:00 AM
Well, based on the reception of yesterday's blog entry, I assume I managed to  piss off or put off just about everyone who read it, and, as the title implies,  I suppose now my name is  mud. I feel like a villain because I  stated an unpopular opinion which was quite ill-received. Am I a bad guy for  caring about every aspect of The Soup- for wanting to make and keep it the best  site for poets on the whole internet? Does it make me a bad person because I  want to enhance our haven- to liven up an overall dead section of our site? If  caring about this makes me a miscreant, then I suppose I shall have to accept  that mantle.

It seems that most people took offensive to the word  "selfish". Based on the replies, it seems that my point was proven, for I heard repeatedly that no one seemed to care about the forums, that they had better things to do; that they were disinterested, etc.  That's the way I perceived it. I have "Borderline" disorder which makes me prone  to look at things in a black and white context. Telling you this is, this is in no way an attempt to play the "mentally ill" card to excuse my behavior and is not a justification; it's simply the way my mind works. In my mind, if you are unwilling to participate in the forums, you must be selfish, and while this may be an extreme jump to conclusion, it's where my mind goes. It doesn't mean that you are in fact selfish or a bad person; it just  means that's how I look at things. Being an impulsive creature by nature, I shoot first and ask questions later. I told myself when I began this post that I was not going to apologize, but after much thought and consideration while typing this, I realize that I did unnecessarily offend and alienate some people, which is something I don't want to do. While I still believe I am right in this matter, I do not want to tread too harshly on anyone's toes, especially since I sincerely want to make new friends. So I will take this opportunity and apologize to anyone I offended. I don't want to make myself into a pariah or outcast here because I genuinely love The Soup.

Yesterday, I spoke out of frustration and did not take many things into consideration before I launched into my tirade. Part of my illness makes me feel inclined to get resentful if people do not act or behave in the way or manner in which I want or expect them to; I can admit that. The leaders of this site do in fact do a good job, and I  shouldn't have targeted them. I did not consider all the good work they do in other areas and aspects. The bottom line is this: after years of scouring the internet for a place that I can call my poetic home and sanctuary, I finally  found it here at The Soup, and perhaps my enthusiasm went overboard. I have had nothing but terrible experiences on every poetry site I've ever joined,  being repeatedly ridiculed and bashed for my poetic style. I just want to make and keep The Soup the wonderful refuge it is. I feel like the  forums are neglected and I was hoping we could all band together and work on it together, but instead of approaching it in a gentler manner, I took the abrasive route, and we all know the adage of catching more flies with honey than vinegar. I made a mistake, and I apologize for it. I will always be prone to making similar mistakes in the future, so I ask for your patience and understanding in this matter. I hope that those I offended can and will forgive me. I spoke in a harsh, demeaning manner and I was/am wrong for that. I hope you will give me another chance. Thanks for taking time to read this. Again, my sincerest apologies. ~Chan Hurst aka JustThatArchaicPoet

This is sort of off-topic, but also not. My comment is in reference to your blog were you called free-verse: "ilk". I read some of your poems, and want to comment here first before commenting on your work. After someone I know read that particular blog, we had a good laugh about it. Which is ok, since during the time while I was blogging a lot, I made an ass of myself so many times. Anyway, wot we quickly realized, is that many of your poems labelled as rhyme, are rhyming free-verse poems -- and when I refer to the overall 'form' of free-verse, I mean within the truest definitions of that expansive form(not prosey, haphazardly written shit which reads like a diary entry left in tepid dishwater). You employ good mechanics in your writing. I enjoy some of your enjambment and line-break choices. I don't want to drop names right now, but some of the most prolific poets of the last 100 hundred years or more, wrote poems which were even more stylized than yours, filled with tons of rhyme, even written in quatrains, etc, and these poems were still labelled as free-verse. To me and many other people, free-verse doesn't imply non-rhyming poems devoid of poetic devices. And within this same context, just because a poem rhymes, this doesn't imply it isn't free-verse. Anyway, had a good, hearty laugh after you called free-verse "ilk", only to find rhyming-style free-verse in your own portfolio.

Hi, Chris. I write organically; the lines and verse are born they way they are born. I never sit down and think, "Ok, this is going to have some free-verse components". In my black and white way of thinking, there is rhyme and non-rhyme, and despite any technicalities, I write rhyme, even though other formats may be incorporated.

Then go home!" That wasn't nice of me...You know i like your poetry, buddy! Keep it ip! ..

You can see by the remarks, we are all friendly here and forgive quickly, and anyway, you were just telling your opinion and your blog went SUPER hot. DANG, I couldn't even get more than a handful of folks a few days ago to watch the funniest talking dog on youtube. hahaha. Anyway, Just remember: opinions are only just opinions. I have very strong opinions too and I feel passionate about them. I have a poster in my room of a lion sitting on a throne saying: "It's my opinion and it's very very true." But not I nor anybody else can really be that "lion" in a place like POetrySoup (much as I'd would love to have everyone feel the same as I do about things!) We are all soup ADDICTS. Party ON!!

Hello Chan: Iv'e done the Forum thing in the past and like Andrea- found it time consuming and unsatisfying. Time is the biggest factor here. and as you know in real life as well as cyberlife...when you force yourself on people they run the opposite way. Just get involved and people will begin to like you for your quiet achievements. Most of us here communicate by leaving comments on poems. peace SuZ

Hi Chan :) I hope all is well with you. Yesterday's blog of yours did get some heated comments...but I am sure they meant no more than speaking their own minds, which we adults do, and actually mean no offense. :) You know I like you :) Also, BTW ~ I have spent an adequate amount of time in the forum to know....that it is just not what it use to be. When the soup first came on the internet, the forum, at that time, was much easier to navigate, and it was actually a whole different place to post poetry.

You will find that Soupers are quick to forgive and forget, if given a chance. A friend is just a click away. We have all stumbled a bit, made mistakes, been misunderstood, or misjudged. But I for one, appreciate your sincerity.... I hope you will enjoy being here. And do hope you can accept that we all are passionate about different things, even when we don't agree, but can still be friends and show respect. Thanks for sharing this blog. :)
