Social Hierarchy

Blog Posted:4/9/2013 7:15:00 AM
I was reading through some materials yesterday, and I came upon this particular
statement made by Confucius an ancient Chinese Philosopher before his death.
Please feel free to express your views on this particular concept.
Your views can both be negative or positive.
“Confucius’s philosophy of education is
based on the idea
that people should learn to
behave correctly
towards one another. For a
person to behave
correctly is for him or her t
o behave in a way
appropriate for his or her
position in the
social hierarchy. This means
that people should obey
those who are higher than themselves in
the social hierarchy and
care for those who
are lower than themselves i
n the hierarchy.
Confucius states that the
family is the most
important structure in
society and argues
that the structure of the
rest of society
should be modeled on the
structure of the

We mustn't view things from our tiny environments and assume the worst or we stifle our own growth. What Confucius is saying here is very difficult to condense into one paragraph because you open yourself to misinterpretation, but if you study the man further you see that when these thoughts are combined with all his other teachings they make total sense and are excellent advice. He also said "Do not impose on others what you yourself do not desire". To grow to be a great leader one first must be a respectful follower. Those that refuse to accept that lower and higher is okay will never grow. Private is low, General is high, but remember Generals were once privates.

Hello, Christine. Nice to meet you. I think that for Confucius the "above" was the government. His view of hierarchy was (is) not related to the "classes" like in the Hinduism. He also gave emphasis to the respect of the parents, the teachers, the elders... they may (also) be the "above."

Hi Ruben, thank you for your comments. You are correct, respect is significant to teachers, parents and elders...but is this being practiced today in the society?

Well, I only logged on to put my views forward as invited. I did not realise I was going to be put in my place, wherever that is. Two questions Craig. 1. What is to much unbridled freedom? 2. Who are those 'above' and 'below, exactly?

Confucius lived over 2500 years ago and all he is saying here is to respect your elders and that, quite honestly, his analogy relative to family and society is a valid one, but at that time family meant something to more people. We are not lucky to be living in this day and age relative to families. Too much unbridled freedom creates chaos. This snippet of Confucius, if read correctly in its purest form is good advice--respect those "above" you and "below" you equally and equality will be the result. We would be lucky to have such people today.

Hi Craig, thank you for your thoughts...I like how you view this topic from different perespective.Yes at that time the family played a significant role in that society.Furthermore, those in higher position should beheave in a way that is consistent to there status so that those below should emulate them...he also draws reference to the family where parents should be good role model for their children.I guess that some parts of his concept could applied in our society today.

Obey and care are two things completely different. There is nobody "above" me as there is nobody "below" me.

Hi Debbie, In my view; A. Education exsists to set people off in life to think and act independently. B. This philosophy buries the idea of equality that we have fought so hard for. C. It crushes the free speech that we hold most dear. D. If these concepts were lived by in the family we would simply live the life someone else wanted and not our own. E. Thank you for posting as it's a useful reminder of how lucky we are to be living in this day and age. Take care Richard
