About Isaiah Zerbst
(Show Details...)
Bloggers Photo       I started writing poetry in February of 2012; getting started by writing poems for a story I was writing, and I have been writing them ever since. I enjoy learning more about the intricacies of poetry, and watching as my poetic skills gradually increase. I have been having a blast trying out some of the different forms here on The Soup and chatting with many people that share a common interest.

I wrote my first real short story when I was twelve; quickly finding out that I enjoyed writing, although I was not very good at it. I attended a writing class for a year, which drastically improved my writing skills and helped me to more accurately transfer my thoughts to the page. Of course, this helps a lot with poetry too.
One of my favorite authors is G. A. Henty; if someone said that my work was nearly as good as his, then I would consider myself a successful author, (although it is not there yet). I have also been influenced somewhat by the writings of Gilbert Morris and Howard Pyle.
My goal in writing is to provide wholesome Christian stories and poems that will be helpful to whoever reads them; stories that promote Christian character, virtue, and reliance upon God. This is the reason that I often include scripture passages and prayers in my work.
I am very thankful that I have been raised in a Christian home, and that Jesus  is the Lord of my life. This may come as a surprise to some, but I would not be  the author that I am today without Jesus, as He has provided a whole new perspective to my life.

I also enjoy playing and writing music (many times for poems that I or a friend have written); I play mostly piano, acoustic guitar, and fiddle.

Thank you for reading! I hope my poems can be a source of blessing and encouragement.

Contest Blog: Congrats to all wool-pullers!
Blog Posted:4/19/2013 10:36:00 AM

As many of you know, I started a contest some time ago called "pull the wool over my eyes!". I received many very good entries. While judging the poems, I tried to guess who wrote which ones-- None of my guesses were correct! Awesome job everyone! That was the spirit of this contest.
I do appologize to some of you that entered free verse entries and did not make it to the winners circle. More than half the poems I received were free verse, some of which I am sure were not first time free versers because I cannot believe that many people had never written a poem in that form before. It is possible that I excluded a legit entry with the ones that I am sure did not follow the rules.
Now to the heart of this blog. I of course did not know how well everyone did until I posted the contest winners and figured out who did the best wool-pulling. This would be someone I am familiar with, but would never guess that the poem belonged to them.
The winner of this part of the contest is...
Craig Cornish.
He did a masterful job of disguising his poem. Especially since I can usually tell which entry he wrote; and he also responded to my first blog, making his task even harder.
Second place is...
Richard Lamoureux.
I didn't know he was a murderer! Look out for him!
Good job both of you. Everyone reading this, please take the time to read their poems, "Tomorrows" and "Dragged to Hell".

Thanks so much everyone for expressing your thoughts on my recent contest. I am so pleased that many of you found it a good experience. I hope you don't mind that I do not have the time to personally reply to all these amazing comments, but that does not make me any less grateful for both your participation in the contest and taking the time to share these encouraging thoughts. God bless! I'll see you around the soup!

I must look for those two you mentioned, and congrats to everyone. I never even tried your contest because I honestly could not think of a form or style to use that I had not done before. So you sure stumped me!
