LEKKER contest finalised
Blog Posted:2/28/2013 10:20:00 AM

Known locally as Heart Bay, Houters or even the Republic of Hout Bay, this sleepy suburb on the very end of the Atlantic Seaboard has a charm that is 100% unique. Essentially, Hout Bay is a fishing village, with a bustling working harbour that boasts yacht charters, fresh fish and even an outdoor market. Added to this is a beautiful beach, laid-back vibe and some of the best scenery in the city.

Thank you all who had made this LEKKER contest a success. One of the requirements of the contest was that the word "LEKKER" had to feature in your poem. There were a number of excellent poems which had disqualified themselves due to not adhering to this simple rule. Sorry...

The winners were excellent and I had a hard time choosing between them. I would like to highlight one of the first place winning poems here. It is a tribute to the South African dialect and it warmed my heart to see that we take pride in our mixed culture, which includes the diverse and special concept of language - we do speak, using idioms from different languages. Yes, I am as surprised as you are! Cyndi, please take a bow - you deserve a gold star on top of the first place Glory. Cheers!!!

SMAAK STUKKEND

Daylight dwindled and the sky was ablaze
with colours so warm that memory blistered,
I sipped hanepoot, recalling meeker days,
nearby, a couple grazed on koeksisters.

She, though choty goty, was wholly dof,
treating her date like he was her boet,
when his eyes said I can’t get enough,
he, as smaak stukkend as a mal poet.

Ag! How I regret the chances not taken,
a lover left waiting, sweetness not pressed.
Damn those who sleep! We must awaken
each slap gat heart that aches for a caress.

I turned to her and sighed, “He’s a lekker!”
Then I mouthed to him, “Moegoe! Just kiss ‘er!”

By Cyndi MacMillan

South African words I've used

hanepoot -- a type of wine
graze-- to eat
Koeksisters -- a type of fried pastry
choty goty -- pretty girl
dof-- stupid
boet -- male friend
smaak stukkend -- to love madly
mal -- crazy
press -- ahem, to have sex
slap gat -- lazy arse
Ag!-- Oh!
lekker -- great, good, wonderful
moegoe -- stupid/coward

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE WINNERS
HAPPY QUILLS!

Su

I am both happy and relieved that you enjoyed my entry, Su! WHEW! I did research, lots of research, but I know unless you live somewhere, trying to capture a 'feel for a place' is chancy. One area of Canada uses a term, Baywhat (Newfoundland) but that term is not used anywhere else in Canada... In one province calling someone a PEPSI can lead to a fist fight. My eyes misted when I realized I'd got it right. Oh, if only I could see your land... the world is truly a large and beautiful place. I'm glad you sponsored this contest and that I got to learn a bit about your culture and people(s.) hugs and love backatcha, Cyndi PS... its been a hard week here, ya made my day!
