Life is an infinite continuum, feeding on its own death. Our mortality, real and imagined, lives within. We can always see these truths with a discerning eye. The mirrored images that seem like two, are but one, a parallel universe whose paths cross like a wisp of wind, we are all of one time, like prose and poems written in separate centuries, but of the same struggle. There, always there, truth never hides, except for those who don’t seek it for fear of what they might find. From light to dark we fly in different directions though toward the same destination. What matters is what we do on our flight. Do we see the paths of leaves as they float on the pond, the reflection of the sky beyond, and the trees, who have now shed their leaves but will reflect full in the spring; beneath the leaves, the roots of the lily pads and the stare of a wary carp who looks from his world as we do from ours? We must find time on our journey to read, play a game, or simply sit and wonder at the marvels around us, for death will come in its own time…

Cornish Sonnet Clarification

Blog Posted:3/19/2014 10:25:00 AM
I know it seems like overload but because of some entries and questions, I want to make sure to clarify any questions about the Cornish Sonnet. No whining allowed because this is the only contest out of 28 requesting meter or sonnet! So the basic rules are this.
Two sestets followed by a couplet. The couplet is made up of the first line of each sestet so make sure those lines work together. The rhyme scheme is Abacbc Dedfef AD. Ideally, consistent meter and line length are required to place high and that combined with quality content will be very high. Here is an example that I wrote recently which is also my first attempt at this form.

A million crystals made by God Now float in space like finest lace. Each one perfection, never flawed - Unique in six-fold symmetry, Then fall to earth in cold embrace Where moonlight dances brilliantly. Reflecting back prismatic light Like nature's crystal chandelier, Embellishing this winter night , Then landing on your blushing cheek And melting there just like a tear. Still drifting with the night's mystique A million crystals made by God Reflecting back prismatic light.

Dearest Debbie, There is no pivot or volta required here (not every sonnet requires one like the 18 line heroic sonnets which will be my next contest) and I prefer the proper poetic term for 6 lines which is sestet--Luv Ya

thanks, Craig. one of those stupids ads on Soup was cutting into the "rules" of your meter in the contest page. For some reason I had thought I had seen an example with fewer syllables in the AD couplet than in the other lines. But it must have been my imagination.

Yes AD---they can be of any length or meter but be as consistent as possible while still presenting your flow and message.

Sorry, I don't know why the poem gets reconfigured when it's posted but if you need to see it in the correct form visit the poem on my page---I am not soliciting comments but only attempting to clarify the form for anyone who needs it--thanks
