I started writing poetry as a young boy, actually they were lyrics to melodies I would invent, performed before the captive audience of Mom and Dad, who were, at least outwardly entertained.  Let’s face it, if you can’t please a loving family it’s probably not a good idea to take your show on the road.  I started writing poems in high school for English and Lit. classes and through college, some for courses, some for loves, and some---just because.  Sold some lyrics for ads and had some writings published.  Then life struck—marriage, family, work, and I didn’t write another poem for years, well, maybe a few.  Then just over a year ago I was searching for inspiration for a eulogy because a friend’s Dad had died and my search lead me to Poetry Soup and the fine poets who reside here.  I have learned more here than in all of my English and Literature classes combined.  I can think of many names that have been particularly inspirational but truly it is the whole—this creative melting pot…Poetry Soup---Thank You

Terzanelle (Hope) Contest
Blog Posted:11/15/2012 4:05:00 PM

Please double check your entries so they conform with the form---sorry, from now on I will be very specific because the soup form can be ambiguous on many occasions--which is a shame----most are correct except for the party crashers wink---please check--even if it closes I will give an extra day for you to edit----thanks

terzanelle is a poetic form combining aspects of the villanelle and the terza rima.[1][2] It is nineteen lines total, with five triplets and a concluding quatrain. The middle line of each triplet stanza is repeated as the third line of the following stanza, and the first and third lines of the initial stanza are the second and final lines of the concluding quatrain; thus, seven of the lines are repeated in the poem.

Ok, here is your form:

A first a
B first b
A second a

B second b
C first c
B repeat first b

C second c
D first D
C repeat first c

D second d
E first e
D repeat first d

E second e

F repeat first f

Thanks, the description given on PS, does somewhat over simplify the form. I wish I'd known the real form when I sat down to write the poem originally, as it would have been a lot easier! Poem now edited and "hopefully" now fits the form!

Thanks, I was confused about how the final quatrain was supposed to be. i.e. the whole line or just an end rhyme. Got it now, hope I can finish my poem! :) Tanya

Craig, is this a good example of what you're looking for? http://www.poets.org/viewmedia.php/prmMID/20062 I am very confused. I see what yuu've posted here is from wikipedia. They have me cross eyed! Course, I'm knackered, which doesn't help. But I found this LOVELY terzanelle --oh, a humdinger! What do you think? Is it correct? I may give this a go, if you let me know. Thanks.

Says the same as you say but in a different way-----see---line 2 repeats line 6---don't want your help here

The are 2 possible beginnings and end choices though PS may not show them aBA or ABA, bCB, cDC, dED & faFA or fFaA....[the capital letters are the repeat of the whole line, the small letter [a] means only that the line ends with a word which rhymes with /a/ etc.

craig, this is a VERY complicated form that took me hours when I composed my first and only one. I was surprised by how quickly your contest filled up and I just guessed that some of them could not be true to form for your contest to have filled as quickly as it did. Unfortunately i have been too busy to find time for it. And now that I will have time this weekend, I fear I will be too late. Dang it!
