About E.J. Smith
(Show Details...)
Bloggers PhotoA bona fide country girl, a hillbilly diva, E.J. Smith always comes back to her beautiful East Tennessee mountains and now she's here to stay. The woods are her favorite place: walking dirt roads or woodland trails to see what God has done. Searching out and watching wildflowers, some rare, all amazing!
The love of my life is my daughter. She came to me when she was two and I was thirty-seven; best move of my life and she will always be the cherry on my sundae!
E.J. lives with her man and the cutest mini schnauser
who ever lived. Keeps us young!
The most important person in my life was my uncle, who died In November, 2010. Died? Actually, he went Home, a goal he had worked on for most of his life.
You will meet him in her poems and stories.
Like you, E.J. has her share of troubles, but has learned not to "sweat the small stuff" and Life is Good!

Everyone Needs an Uncle Joe

Blog Posted:9/18/2011 7:07:00 AM
Joseph Stokely Rainwater: my uncle, my mentor, my sidekick, my traveling buddy and all around most perfect person I ever knew. Born February 7, 1946. Died November 12, 2010.
Joe was born with Down Syndrome, but let me tell you people, he was just the best and most devoted friend I ever had.

In future postings, I will be sharing poems and stories about Joe's life and some of the amazing things he did and said. Starting is the birth poem:

February 7, 1946

Where's my baby?

Bring my baby!

She knew something was wrong

Who did she think she was

To risk having a child at forty-six?

The new love demanded it though

And she had prayed it would be all right.

But it wasn't.

Those almond eyes, that scar!

The old doctor said put it away

It will never grow.

It will never know you.

It will be a vegetable.

Leave it where it will get the care it needs.

Calmly, she disagreed, IT? the care IT needs?

I will care for him, he is my SON!

I will love him, teach him

And be proud of his accomplishments.

And he grew, and he loved

And accomplished much.

His greatest feat being that

Of bringing a family together

Teaching them how to love

And to be proud of him.

Thank you for sharing this, E.J.-- this is such a beautiful story to share-- I was blessed to have taught a couple of toddlers with Down's syndrome and they totally warm my heart-- I think your uncle was truly a wonderful person who has touched so many lives.
