Cyndi MacMillan is a well-rounded writer who embraces many genres and forms. Her work has been published in local newspapers and has won contests. She enjoys reading literary journals, and she is actively pursuing publication within their glossy covers.

Verse is both magnetic and kinetic. She attempts - madly- to give equal attention to her poetry, short stories, and a novel-in-progress, the Trim of Wicks.  Regardless of genre, she focuses on language. One word has the power to repel or pull. She never forgets the reader and does her best to make their ride interesting.

Poetry soup is a good forum which enables people from around the world to share poetry. It has some great resources and provides a nice space for friends to meet.

Cyndi lives in a small town in Ontario with her husband, young daughter and far too many books.

MY NEW CONTEST: MODERN SONNET / RENAISSANCE WOMAN (Sorry! My other will be judged next week!)

Blog Posted:9/26/2013 10:32:00 PM
I must apologize to all those who entered my free verse contest.. I promise to give all your beauties the time and focus EACH deserves next week. Life has sent me a few hiccups as of late.  Working my way back to you!

For my next contest...

Sofonisba Anguissola was a woman artist from the fifteenth/sixteenth century. Born into nobility, she is one of the few women painters of this time who was not the daughter of an established master.

Her works are... to me... beautiful, filled with emotion, feminine perspective and they represent the power of a woman’s love, the strength found in nurturing.

Her depictions of the Virgin and child openly show a loving bond and there is such warmth to her work. The maternal aspects of certain works should resonate with mothers of today... there is something so universal and timeless about these masterpieces. Her portraits of women seem to capture moods, personas.

So, for this contest, I would like you to write a CONTEMPORARY SONNET on any painting by Sofonisba Anguissola (or on the artist, herself).

I only ask that you leave me a brief note under your poem with either the painting's title or an indication of what 'birthed' your verse.. ;)

So, here are some of her paintings. However, if you find another ONE OF HER PAINTINGS which inspires you, feel free to use it (but REMEMBER, include a note below your sonnet with the painting’s title, please, please and thank you.)

Sites about this artist:

Many contemporary sonnets utilize a great deal of enjambment and place punctuation wherever/however the poet sees fit. Syllable count between lines may diverge slightly, say 9-13 syllables, though I have even seen today’s sonneteers vary their line lengths drastically. Rhyme schemes vary or may seem without pattern or consistency. Near, off, slant rhyme is oven used. There is still a volta, though it may come later than the traditional ninth line.

Hope that all helped. So go medievally modern, turn a phrase and see what comes of blending the old and new. Have fun or go bust! Love yas!

THE PAINTING WITHIN HER SELF PORTRAIT...

INSPIRED THIS FROM ME...

THE VIRGIN AND CHILD

Blesséd cheek worships Holy cheek, the Son

is adored with a tender touch, a gentle gaze,

the Madonna, as all mothers, left undone

by life's greatest gift, every sacred phase.

How soft His suckle, how hallowed His cries,

those first words astounded, lightened her heart,

within His warm eyes she watched the sun rise,

though stars sang sad lullabies, Heaven’s concert.

Soon, too soon, will come tremendous sorrow

for the Lamb that she swaddled will one day bleed,

but Jesus just smiles, says, Fear not tomorrow,

Love will provide all the courage we need.

Mary, raised by her own, forever awed

that her arms had once rocked the Grace of God.

Hello, Cyndi! It's nice to see you around the Soup. How are you? Im still without the feeling ... the urgency of writing. Maybe I find my muse during the cold winter nights. : ) Have a great day.
